Antarctica & The Falkland Islands

January 22 - February 25, 2006

January 22 - February 25, 2007

December 4 - 18, 2007

Description: Below 60º South latitude lies the immense "White Continent" of Antarctica, a land like no other in the geography and history of the world. As a naturalist during an expedition cruise aboard the 122-passenger Clipper Adventurer, Lori helps passengers explore Antarctica's ethereal icescapes and abundant wildlife. Here, in the austral summer, the sun has emerged after the long winter night and wildlife abounds, with colonies of penguins that stretch as far as the eye can see, thawed coves and waterways that host migrating whales, and seals basking on sun-lit beaches.

Ever-flowing glaciers churn up gravelly paths on the shoulders of massive peaks. Blue-tinged icebergs, some miles long, rise out of placid waters. Wildlife abounds — beaches resound with the bellows of fur seals, a chorus of seabird calls echoes from the cliffs, and penguins waddle and bellyride the slopes. Well-preserved historic huts established by explorers are intact with whale-oil lanterns, well-worn cooking utensils, and maybe even a yellowing newspaper of the era.

The Falklands' beauty is more subtle. Rolling hills are interspersed with bogs and small lakes, creating a habitat for penguins and seabirds, which nest among tall tussock grass, while seals and whales cavort along the seacoasts.

Chilean Fjords & Cape Horn

February 22 - March 9, 2007

Description: Aboard the Clipper Adventurer as a naturalist, Lori explores some of the world's narrowest and most scenic fjords. Near the serrated southern tip of Chile, the Southern Andes plunge into icy waters, leaving a region so wild and remote that it has been virtually untouched since the beginning of time. It is here, in Chile's fjords, that the sea has sliced its way between the mountains, leaving isolated islands and hidden coves in its wake.

Although they number more than all of those in Scandinavia, Chile's magnificent fjords are practically unknown except to a few expedition cruisers. Lori will see several majestic glaciers during her cruise. While sailing through the Beagle Channel, she'll witness the evidence of glaciers' inexorable march from jagged valleys to the sea - huge chunks of ice that mark the glacial passage. In Torres del Paine National Park, she'll encounter a mythic land of windswept pampas, hanging glaciers, and cloud-piercing peaks where an immense variety of wildlife thrives. While various ships sail these waters, only a small vessel like the Clipper Adventurer can sail the inside passage, “the English Narrows” of Chile's fjords; larger ships must remain mostly outside in the open Pacific.

The Russian Far East Islands

June 13 - June 23, 2006

Description: Lori embarked on a unique voyage of discovery sailing with fewer than 130 fellow passengers from Russia's Kuril Islands to the Kamchatka Peninsula aboard the attractive and comfortable Clipper Odyssey. She encountered fascinating geology and rich cultural traditions as she explored the Kurils, a chain of mountainous islands formed by the summits of an underwater mountain ridge that stretches for almost 750 miles from Japan's Hokkaido Island in the southwest to the Kamchatka Peninsula in the northeast. Among the least-visited and most-pristine environments on Earth, some display stark, lava landscapes that foster streams and pools heated by geothermal activity, while others boast lush forests, moss-covered boulders, and black-sand beaches. She continued on to Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula, enjoying the long hours of daylight that linger at this time of year. She immersed herself in the pristine beauty of the Zhupanova River and its surrounding landscape during a Zodiac excursion. Part of a distinguished group of experts accompanying the passengers on this exceptional voyage, she enhanced their enjoyment of the unique places they visited with her knowledge and experience.
